The simple part: Paraffin vs Soy WaxParaffin wax is basically the sludge left over from refining petroleum. Gross. Soy wax is a hydrogenated form of soybean oil. While soybean farming and the wax that comes from it are not environmentally perfect, they are infinitely better than the planet destroying nature of petroleum. Soy is, at the very least, a renewable resource and is cleaner than paraffin. It also binds better to fragrance oil to keep your candle smelling like new all the way to the bottom! This was a no-brainer for us! Note: While there are other waxes out there, most are, unfortunately, still too expensive to use in candle making if we're going to keep our candles affordable. We do plan to have a line of beeswax candles in the future though! |
Not all Soy Wax Candles are Created Equal! While we believe any soy candle is preferable to all paraffin candles, the truth is that not all soy wax candles are created equal. What’s the difference you may ask? It all comes down to the fragrance oil used to create the scents we all love. It can be difficult to make some scents without using toxic chemicals. Essential oils do not bind well to wax on their own, and some smells, such as the smell of an apple, do not have an essential fragrance that can be extracted. To overcome these hurdles, most candle makers use what are called Fragrance Oils. These are combinations of essential oils, artificial fragrances, and carrier oils (natural oils that help bind essential oils to wax molecules). These fragrance oils bind much better to the wax molecules, allowing for longer lasting scent retention. Unfortunately, many fragrance oil manufacturers still use toxic chemicals in their products. We decided on day one that it was either going to be clean all the way through, or we just weren’t going to start this journey. Luckily, we found a fantastic fragrance oil manufacturer called Candle Science. This company shares our passion for sustainable eco friendly products, and they have a line of fragrance oils that are 100% clean. That means our candles have no parabens, phthalates, carcinogens, or known toxins of any kind! These candles are as “clean” as candles can currently get! |

But we keep striving to do betterWherever we can we are constantly looking for ways to make not just our candles, but every part of the process as clean as possible. That means 100% recyclable or compostable materials in our products and our shipping process. We use 100% recycled glass jars, lead free paper/cotton wicks, biodegradable labels, biodegradable peanuts, biodegradable paper wrappings, and craft paper tape wherever possible. Currently we are working towards:
